Italian step by step

Why are you learning Italian? Well, maybe you're not exactly "learning" it, or at least not yet. But why are you interested or intrigued about it, why are you reading about it, looking for translations, wondering about expressions and authors? 

A while ago, a reader from AllExperts.com asked me about Federico Moccia, a contemporary popular Italian novelist, whose books and movies are loved by teenagers and young people. He told me that he had been reading Federico Moccia's "Tre metri sopra il cielo" (Three Meters Above the Sky) just by typing the Italian text line by line into Google translate. This let me understand, obviously, that he is not exactly an Italian learner - but the point is that he was so fond of this Italian author and the kind of Italian pop culture he deals with, that he found out a way to translate the book and "read" it. (As a matter of fact, Federico Moccia has been translated into various languages, but not into English yet.)

Many people ask about Italian for traveling purposes. They want to visit Italy and they dream about wonderful landscapes, beautiful monuments, and delicious food. 

Other people want to work in the tourist or restaurant industry; they study the language as well as the culture, food and/or history of Italy. 

Others love Italian movies, music or tv programs. 

Some people want to communicate with Italian relatives in their own language, to honor a part of the family history that has been lost for them, but has not been totally forgotten. Maybe their surname is an Italian one, but they aren't sure about the very way to pronounce it. 

You can be interested in Italian because of your interest in our country, or just because of the language; because you live in Italy, or you've never been there at all; because you're planning to move to Italy or you're just planning an imaginary trip. You may simply want to understand some Italian or to speak and communicate properly.

Perché stai imparando l'italiano? Bene, forse non lo stai esattamente "imparando" - non ancora. Ma perché ne sei interessato o attratto, leggi del materiale, cerchi traduzioni, ti interroghi sulle espressioni o sugli autori?

Qualche tempo fa, un lettore di AllExperts.com mi chiese informazioni circa uno scrittore italiano molto noto oggigiorno, i cui libri e film sono apprezzati da teenager e giovani: Federico Moccia. Mi disse che aveva letto il libro di Federico Moccia "Tre metri sopra il cielo", semplicemente inserendo il testo, riga per riga, nel traduttore di Google.

Da questo si capisce, ovviamente, che non è proprio uno studente di italiano - ma il punto è che era talmente appassionato di questo autore e del tipo di cultura popolare con cui ha a che fare, che ha trovato un modo per ottenere una traduzione e arrivare alla fine del libro. Federico Moccia, infatti, è stato tradotto in varie lingue, ma non ancora in inglese.

Molte persone chiedono informazioni sulla lingua italiana per motivi di viaggio. Vogliono visitare l'Italia e sognano di paesaggi meravigliosi, bei monumenti, cibo sopraffino.

Altri vogliono lavorare nel campo del turismo o della ristorazione; studiano la lingua così come la cultura, la cucina e/o la storia dell'Italia.

Altri ancora amano i film italiani, la musica o i programmi televisivi.

Alcune persone vogliono comunicare con parenti italiani nella loro lingua, una parte della storia di famiglia che è andata perduta, ma non dimenticata. Forse il loro cognome è italiano, ma non sono nemmeno sicuri sulla pronuncia.

Puoi essere interessato all'italiano per via del paese o per la lingua soltanto; perché ci abiti o perché non ci sei mai stato, perché stai progettando di trasferirti o soltanto per sognare un viaggio immaginario. Potresti desiderare solo di comprendere un po' di italiano o anche di parlarlo e di comunicare correttamente.
